Boeing has secured an order to sell 40 twin-aisle aircraft, including 30 787-9 Dreamliners and ten 777-300ERs, to Qatar Airways for $11.7bn at list prices.

Additionally, both the groups have signed a letter of intent for up to 60 737 MAX 8 jets, worth at $6.9bn at list prices.

The latest order has raised Qatar Airways’ firm order backlog of Boeing widebody aircraft from 65 to 105, including 60 777X planes.

Currently, the airline operates a fleet of 84 Boeing aircraft, including 787s and 777s.

Qatar Airways group chief executive Akbar Al Baker said: "Qatar Airways, already one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of aviation, today announces a significant and historic aircraft order that will power our future growth for the years and the decades ahead.

"Boeing has proven to be a valuable partner, and today's announcement is testament to our appreciation of the quality of their product and their dedication to providing world class customer service."

Previously, Qatar Airways became the launch customer for the Boeing 777X plane.

Part of Boeing’s 787 family of aircraft, the 787-9 Dreamliner can accommodate 290 passengers.

The company is set to begin delivery of its new family of single-aisle airplanes, including 737 MAX 7, 737 MAX 8, 737 MAX 9 and 737 MAX 200, by next year.

In August, Mauritania Airlines placed an order for one next-generation 737-800 plane with Boeing.

The deal is valued at $96m at current list prices.
